The GW Department of Athletics announced today that Michelle Demko will not return as head coach of the women's soccer program. Originally hired in 2018 after serving at the highest levels of coaching in soccer, Demko was at the helm of GW for six seasons, highlighted by a trip to the Atlantic 10 Championship game in 2019, the program's first appearance in the conference final since 1997.
"I am filled with immense joy and gratitude for my time at GW," said Coach Demko. "The leadership within the department is a big reason for the wonderful experiences I was afforded these last six years. There are outstanding leaders who prioritize a people-first environment driven by core values and connectivity. It was a privilege to serve in this department and I wish everyone continued success."
A Maryland alumna, who was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's 50th Anniversary Women's Soccer Team, Demko had a wildly successful professional playing career prior to entering the coaching ranks, including competing in national team training camps in 1995, 1996 and 1997, and earning a cap with the U.S. Women's National Team while playing against Germany in 1997.
"Michelle is so highly regarded by her colleagues and will be missed in our community," noted GW Athletics Director Tanya Vogel. "I am grateful for her commitment to the holistic growth and development of her students, and I wish her the very best as she begins this next chapter of her own leadership journey."
