The Buff and Blue open 2023 in dominant fashion

WASHINGTON - Senior Day at the Smith Center did not disappoint, as GW swimming and diving thwarted Johns Hopkins, 158-102 (men's) and 173-87 (women's). Competing for the first time in the new year, the Buff and Blue won 20 out of 28 events, including five podium sweeps in swimming, and another two on the diving boards.

Men's Highlights:

The men began the day by taking first (1:32.13) and second place (1:32.45) in the 200-yard medley relay. The GW 'B' relay edged out the first-place finish, as Marek Osina, Preston Lin, Dylan Koo and Matthew Whelan captured full points.
The Colonials took first, second and third in the 200-yard butterfly. First-year Daniel Nagy took first (1:50.36), narrowly beating out Osina (1:50.52) by .16 seconds. Sophomore Connor Rodgers finished in third (1:51.98) in the event.
Whelan, Djurdje Matic and Koo captured the top-three 50-yard freestyle times. Whelan grabbed first (21.14), followed by Matic in second (21.16) and Koo in third (21.44).
Whelan secured his second individual victory of the meet, tying Chirstian Mayr of Johns Hopkins for first place (46.99) in the 100-yard freestyle. Tyler Kawakami finished third (47.06) in the event, just .07 off the first-place finishers.
Philip Moldovanu took gold (9:23.21) in the 1000-yard freestyle, beating out Johns Hopkins' Kellen Roddy by just under 2.5 seconds.
On the diving boards, Spencer Bystrom led the way, capturing victories in both the one (274.95) and three (297.83) meter dives.
Moldovanu grabbed his second gold (4:34.19) of the meet in the 500-yard freestyle.
Matic secured first (49.28), and Nagy took second (49.75) in the 100-yard butterfly.
Ryan Patterson and Ganesh Sivaramakrishnan took first (50.89) and second (50.93) in the men's 100-yard backstroke, respectively.
The Buff and Blue took first and second in the 200-yard backstroke. Karol Mlynarczyk paced the group and took first (1:49.07), while Patterson finished in second (1:53.10).
Osina grabbed gold (1:51.23) in the 200-yard IM, followed by sophomore Bode Ringenbach in second (1:54.96). Osina was just under six seconds off his personal best (1:44.72), which is also an A-10 record.

Women's Highlights:

GW got out to a hot start, taking both first (1:46.23) and second (1:48.78) in the 200-yard medley relay. The Buff and Blue 'A' relay took first place, swam by Marlee Rickert, Ava DeAngelis, Moriah Freitas and Barbara Schaal.
GW completed a podium sweep of the 100-yard backstroke, led by program record holders Rickert and Schaal. Schaal took first place (56.67), while Rickert finished in second (57.71) and Abby Clark took third (58.94).
The Colonials followed up their dominant 100-yard backstroke with another podium sweep, this time in the 100-yard breaststroke. DeAngelis set the pace and took first (1:04.96), while Molly Smyers took second (1:07.15) and Stine Omdahl Petersen finished in third (1:07.47).
The women showed no signs of slowing down in the second half of the meet, completing yet another sweep of the top three in the 200-yard breaststroke. DeAngelis grabbed her second individual victory (2:22.52) of the day, while Julia Knox (2:24.67) and Smyers (2:26.45) followed closely behind.
Ava Topolewski picked up right where she left off in the fall, continuing to dominate in the long-distance freestyle swims. Topolewski took first place in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.00) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:11.64). In the 1000-yard freestyle Topolewski finished a whopping 15 seconds ahead of second-place swimmer.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Freitas nabbed gold (2:04.61), while Topolewski took silver (2:06.65). Freitas, a sophomore, went on to sweep the butterfly, as she also took first (57.39) in the 100-yard butterfly.
Senior Caitlin Inall had GW's high score (263.85) in the one meter dive, while sophomore Dara Reyblat secured the three-meter victory (266.48).
Knox took first place (2:06.43) in the 200-yard IM, followed closely behind by Smyers (2:07.76). It's an event Knox knows well - she holds both GW individual-medley program records.
Phoebe Wright scored full points in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.12) and 100-yard backstroke (2:03.11), after capturing first place in both races.
