GW scores two unanswered goals to down Duquesne
WASHINGTON – George Washington women's soccer scored a pair of unanswered goals to beat Duquesne on Senior Day at The Vern, 2-1.
Senior Sammy Neyman helped make Sunday a successful sendoff for her and her six graduating teammates when she scored a penalty kick to tie the contest at one. Then in the second half, junior Elizabeth Cruz polished off the win with her second of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
33rd Minute –The Dukes opened the scoring with a goal from Mackenzie Muir. The first-year's initial shot hit the post and she was able to corral her own rebound and deposit it into the back of the net.
40th Minute – GW was awarded a penalty following a mistimed challenge by Duquesne goalkeeper Maddy Nuendorfer. Neyman was tasked to take the penalty kick and chipped the ball into the left corner of the net for the goal.
64th Minute – Cruz helped George Washington ice the victory after her initial shot hit the post and ended up on the foot of Aoi Kataoka, who passed it back to Cruz for the goal.
NOTEWORTHY:
•Before Sunday's game, GW honored Neyman, Rachel Sorkenn, Cammie Dopke, Isabelle Eskay, Tori Minda, Isabella Buck and Aza Keohan for their contributions to the program.
•Neyman's goal was her fourth of the season, establishing a new career-high for the grad student.
•Cruz and Buck led GW with three shots apiece, while Neyman led the team with two shots-on-goal.
•Kataoka's assist was her third of the season. Kataoka led all first-year players with five points in 2022.
•GW ends the year with seven wins, its most in a campaign since 2019.
