Volleyball Tops Duquesne in Straight Sets

Porter records 10 kills, five blocks
PITTSBURGH – GW volleyball earned its first A-10 series sweep of the season on Saturday, topping Duquesne in straight sets, 25-22, 25-23, 25-19.Â
BY THE NUMBERSÂ
Tierra Porter led the GW offense with 10 kills and Liv Womble added nine. As a team, GW out-hit the Dukes .195 to .142, powered by 39 kills. Grace Allread helped cue the GW offense with 16 assists and Dilara Elmacioglu added 15. Porter and Womble each tallied five blocks, leading a GW defense that registered 18 blocks on the day.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
GW registered a match-high 17 kills in the opening set behind a .214 hitting percentage. GW started the scoring with three-straight points and never surrendered its lead to take a 1-0 set advantage.Â
After the Dukes garnered momentum to take a 9-6 lead in set two, GW strung together a pair of four-point scoring runs to regain control at 18-13. The Dukes cut the deficit to one point, but three Duquesne errors and a kill from Salem Yohannes lifted GW to a 2-0 set advantage.Â
Duquesne began set three in a similar fashion, creating a 13-10 lead before four lead changes took place midway through the third set. GW then took the lead at 20-19, and thanks to errorless serving from Grace Allread, GW scored five-straight points to earn the 3-0 sweep.Â

GW heads to George Mason on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match in Fairfax before welcoming Saint Louis to the Smith Center next weekend.Â
