Pair honored after 3-0 weekend of conference play
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington's Andras Levai and Luca Castorina have earned Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference weekly honors after helping the Buff and Blue get off to a 3-0 start to conference play.
Levai was honored as the MAWPC Player of the Week for the second time this season after totaling 11 goals and six assists in the three victories, while Castorina picked up his second straight Defensive Player of the Week award in recognition of his excellent work in net.
Levai's best performance of the weekend came in GW's home opener when he matched a career high with nine points via six goals and three assists in a 20-13 win at Smith Center Pool. The graduate student from Budapest, Hungary, also tallied two goals, three assists and two steals in Friday's 12-11 victory at Johns Hopkins and tallied a game-high three goals, plus two steals and a field block, in an 8-5 triumph at Bucknell on Sunday.
Castorina stopped better than 60 percent of the shots that he faced in the three victories, piling up 36 saves against 23 goals allowed, plus nine steals and three assists.Â
The sophomore goalkeeper made 15 saves at Johns Hopkins before stopping 11 shots vs. seven goals allowed in three quarters of work in the win over Mount St. Mary's. On Sunday, he stymied Bucknell, posting 10 saves and a career-high five steals while holding the Bison scoreless over the game's final 10:23.
It's the fifth career MAWPC Player of the Week award for Levai, who was honored earlier this season after the Princeton Invitational. He paces the Buff and Blue in goals (29), assists (17), points (46) and steals (17) through 11 games.
With his back-to-back honors, Castorina now owns three career MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week awards. The netminder has averaged 12.6 saves per game for the season while posting a .506 cumulative save percentage.
Looking to extend a four-game winning streak overall, GW will be back in action this week on the West Coast, beginning with a Friday doubleheader vs. Cal Baptist and La Verne.
