Swimming & Diving Drops Challenging Opener vs. Virginia Tech

Doak qualified for NCAA Zones at Smith Center Pool
WASHINGTON - GW swimming and diving welcomed back alumni, revealed banners honoring two Atlantic 10 champion squads and hosted Virginia Tech on Saturday at Smith Center Pool.
Among a slew of solid opening performances, Jamie Doak put together a starring effort on the boards, highlighted by a personal-best score of 269.25 on the 1-meter board that qualifies her for the NCAA Zone Championships in March.
Newcomers Molly Smyers, Julia Knox, Moriah Freitas, Carly Perri, Connor Rodgers and Durde Matic all paced the Buff and Blue in at least one event before a packed home crowd vs. the Hokies.
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS:
- Last year's A-10 Most Outstanding Performer, Karol Mlynarczyk posted two excellent swims that rank among the best in the country so far this season. In the 100 back, the sophomore from Warsaw, Poland, touched second in a time of 49.36 seconds, and in the 200 back, he was runner-up in 1:49.92. In both races, he was narrowly edged by All-American Samuel Tornqvist.
- In his GW debut, the ECU transfer Matic paced the Buff and Blue in the 50 free (fourth, :21.09) and 100 fly (fourth, :49.13), while the rookie Rodgers led the squad in a pair of events in his first collegiate meet, placing fourth in the 200 free (1:43.14) and fifth in the 200 fly (1:55.70).
- Marek Osina was the top Buff and Blue finisher in three events, highlighted by runner-up swims in the 100 breast (:57.54) and 200 IM (1:51.46).
- DH Hwang (1,000 free, 9:56.84), Tyler Kawakami (100 free, :47.34) and Josh Legge (500 free, 4:51.27) also posted team-best times.
- Spencer Bystrom led GW on both the 3-meter (292.21) and 1-meter (255.30) diving boards.
- Mlynarczyk, Matic and Kawakami were also part of GW's top teams in the 400 medley (3:21.59) and 200 free (1:25.01) relays.
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS:
- Doak finished third on both diving boards. With her Zones-qualifying score on 1-meter, the junior from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, eclipsed her previous career high by nearly 16 points and was within striking distance of the program record. She also totaled 265.05 on 3-meter.
- Three rookies posted team-best times: Knox was runner-up in the 200 free (1:55.03) and third in the 200 IM (2:07.70), Freitas landed second in the 100 fly (:57.64) and Smyers placed third in the 1,000 free (10:33.11).
- A graduate transfer from Duke, Perri led the way in the 200 fly with a third-place finish in 2:07.98.
- Stine Omdahl Petersen (100 breast, 1:06.72; 200 breast, 2:24.21), Marlee Rickert (100 back, :57.26; 200 back, 2:07.31) and Becca Brown (50 free, :24.25; 100 free, :53.95) also posted a pair of top times for the Buff and Blue.
- Defending A-10 1,650 free champion Erin McCarthy was the top Buff and Blue finisher in the 500 free at 5:09.49.
- Brown and Rickert were both part of GW's top teams in the 400 medley (3:53.28) and 200 free (1:38.08) relays.
