Womble and Yohannes record double-figure matches
FAIRFAX, Va. – GW volleyball couldn't erase a 2-0 set advantage by George Mason, falling to the Patriots in four sets on Friday night, 21-25, 17-25, 25-16, 22-25.
Salem Yohannes and Liv Womble led the GW offense with 11 kills apiece and MC Daubendiek earned a career-high five kills.
George Mason jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in set one, but five Patriot errors gave GW control at 6-4. From there, Mason put together three separate scoring runs, but GW kept within striking distance thanks to kills from Yohannes and Melody Williams. GW then went on its own scoring run, rattling off five in a row to regain the lead at 21-20. Five straight Mason points would close set one and give the home team the 1-0 set advantage.
Seventeen kills in set two by the Patriots helped pave the way to a 20-9 advantage. A late surge by GW cut the Mason lead to six, but the Buff & Blue would ultimately fall into a 2-0 set deficit.
GW's offense came alive in set three, finding the other side of the floor 15 times to hit .333. Mason held the narrow edge at 3-2 to open the set, but a pair of kills from GW and two Patriot errors gave the visitors control. From there, GW didn't look back, maintaining the advantage the rest of the way. After a five-point scoring run, GW stretched its lead to 21-13 and would allow just three more points before putting the set away.
The final set went back and forth before GW pulled in front at 14-10. The home team then found its best offense of the night, tallying nine of their 20 kills in the set to put the match away.
UP NEXT: GW will host George Mason on Saturday at 5 p.m. for its second match of back-to-back conference contests.
