Beyond The Bio: Kevin DeMille
6/15/2020 12:03:00 PM | My GW: Celebrating our Stories
Welcome back to Beyond the Bio, where we'll get to know more about the people behind the scenes at GW Athletics.
Â
In this edition, we learn about Kevin DeMille who is entering his fifth year as a member of the Buff & Blue. He is in his fourth year as an assistant coach for the women's basketball team, and just completed his M.A. in Media and Strategic Communication from GW's School of Media and Public Affairs. Let's take a deeper dive into Kevin's passions, favorite places and what he loves most about being a Colonial.
Â
When I'm not working, my favorite thing to do is?
Travel. I feel a sense of responsibility to be a citizen of the world, to be in different places and experience others' cultures. Anthony Bourdain once said "Walk in someone else's shoes, or at least eat their food." I try to model both of those!
Â
If I was an animal, I would be?
A seahorse. Because of their body structure, they must eat constantly to stay alive, and I just really relate to that.
Â
If I could only eat one meal for every meal for the rest of my life, it would be?
Chicken parm. (It's scary how easy this was for me to answer!)
Â
My favorite place I've ever been is?
The Olympics. I worked with USA Basketball (and Coach Rizzotti!) at the 2016 Games in Rio, and there is just no experience like it. The pride, the festivities, the community atmosphere, exchanging of cultures, the food...the Olympics are incredible.
Â
If I could have coffee with anybody in the world, living or historical, he/she would be?
If the person can be fictional, Jed Bartlet's Press Secretary and Chief of Staff, C.J. Cregg (from The West Wing)
If the person has to be real, Julia Louis Dryfus.
Â
The one job in GW Athletics I'd like to do for a day is?
Coach the gymnastics team. They are such a passionate, hardworking and dedicated group - I love their energy and enthusiasm, their high standards and their competitiveness!
Â
The person I'm most inspired by is?
My parents. They are coaches and teachers, but they also have forced me to recognize my benefits in life and my responsibility to pay that forward to others.
Â
My favorite book, movie, TV show or podcast is?
Book: Harry Potter (and, for the record, trans women are women!) or The Great Gatsby
Movie: The Birdcage
TV Show: Will & Grace or The West Wing
My top #OnlyAtGWÂ moment was?
Walking home frustrated after a tough practice in 2018 (the year we won the A-10 Championship!) and bumping into Hillary Clinton in DuPont Circle. Talk about a change in perspective!
Â
If I could be granted the gift of elite athleticism, I'd like to be able to?
Return a Serena Williams serve!
