Capgemini Colonials of the Week: Athletic Trainers Chris Duncan and Kierra Croons

Athletic trainers are by nature a "hands-on" group of people. They prepare, they heal, they listen and they console. For two of GW's finest though, their exceptional hands-on work with GW student-athletes has taken a rightful pause along with the rest of the world of sport as healthcare practitioners across the globe join forces to combat the spread of COVID-19.Â
Â
Chris Duncan and Kierra Croons are employed by the GW Hospital and check in here to share how they are using their talents and opportunities in a different environment with much higher stakes.

Chris DuncanÂ
"I am continuing with the safety aspect of athletic training by ensuring there are clean areas around the Physical Therapy Clinic and performing temperature checks for all who enter the hospital to ensure everyone stays safe in the hospital and to isolate anyone who may need further assistance. Also, there are Safety Officer rounds where we go to all floors and see if doctors and nurses need anything in particular and ensure they are putting all proper personal protective equipment (PPE) on properly, such as gowns, gloves and masks, while also ensuring they are taken off correctly each time to avoid further infections."
Â
Kierra CroonsÂ
"I am assisting in preventative and safety measures. Thus far, I have worked in the Emergency Department and the Outpatient Rehabilitation Center. I screen patients, staff and visitors and redirect any red flags and susceptible patients to seek further medical help if necessary. Temperatures are taken, and we ask questions pertaining to symptoms, travel and exposure to COVID-19. At the Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, we have been using an algorithm to help determine if a patient is high-risk. It's a proactive approach to protecting patient health and well-being. Additionally, our management has provided consistent updates to ensure the safety of patients and staff by requiring us to follow the recommendations set by the CDC. We have also taken precautionary measures to prevent further spreading of the virus by consistently cleaning all areas that are used for patient care and that are frequently used by people. Seeing everyone come together and lend a hand has been humbling. I am thankful to have the opportunity to do my part to fight this virus and keep our community members safe and healthy."
