Junior continues to be a leader for men's water polo
Name: Gabriele Simonti
Sport: Men's Water Polo
Year: Junior
Hometown: Florence, Italy
Last fall, Simonti made an instant impact with GW men's water polo, totaling 59 points via 40 goals and 19 assists, plus 30 field blocks to tie the program single-season record, for a squad that advanced to the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference final and finished the season ranked No. 17 nationally. The junior from Italy was also honored on the ACWPC All-Academic Team for his work in the classroom toward a Psychology degree.
Simonti, who remains in Foggy Bottom attending online classes and staying fit best he can while social distancing, continues to be a leader for the Buff and Blue during this unprecedented period.
In recognition of his continued push for all-around excellence amid difficult circumstances, GW head coach Barry King nominated Simonti as Colonial of the Week.
"In the face of all the challenges brought on by COVID-19 and the added worry of his family in Italy, Gabri has maintained the quality of his academic work," King said. "His commitment to doing the highest level work in the classroom, in the pool and in the weight room has earned him the respect of his teammates and our coaching staff. One of our goals as a program is to engage and produce scholar-athletes, not just student-athletes. Gabri is the epitome of a scholar-athlete."
