During halftime of the women's basketball game against Rhode Island on Tuesday night, GW's Athletic Academic Dean's List members and the student-athletes' choice for Professor of the Year were honored.
In order to be recognized on the Dean's List, student-athletes had to achieve a 3.0 grade point average or higher in either the spring 2019 or fall 2019 semesters. Last semester, 71% of GW student-athletes achieved a GPA of 3.0 or greater while the Department's cume GPA was 3.22, marking at least the 17th consecutive semester that GW Athletics had a GPA higher than 3.10. In the spring of 2019, 71% of student-athletes had a GPA north of 3.0 with a whopping 165 student-athletes (35%) boasting a 3.5+ grade point average.Â
Among the student-athletes honored, 13 achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA in either the spring or fall semester of 2019. Logan Othmer (golf), Olivia Cantrell (women's rowing), Nora Vedder (women's rowing), Michael Houllahan (sailing), Fares Tello (men's soccer), Haukar Hilmarsson (men's soccer), Sandro Weber (men's soccer), Olivia Cantrell (women's rowing), Emily Schmid (women's soccer), Jessica Linquist (softball), Faith Weber (softball), Allison Lapps (women's swimming & diving), Skylar Iott (volleyball) and Caroline Sklaver (volleyball). 10 additional 2019 graduates also achieved perfect marks in the spring '19 semester. Â
"This night is an opportunity to celebrate the commitment and priority our student-athletes make to excellence in the classroom and to recognize the dedication of our coaches, staff and faculty who support Athletics' role in higher education," said Interim Assistant Director of Athletics for Educational Support Services Karen Ercole. "These students and their families and teams should be lauded, alongside the tireless Educational Support Services team who have dedicated their time to helping others learn and grow."
Prior to the Dean's List recognitions, the student-athletes' choice for the Professor of the Year was recognized. Each year, student-athletes are asked to submit nominations for their most valued professor, who makes the greatest contribution to the academic success of GW's student-athletes. Once nominations are submitted, GW student-athletes then vote upon four finalists and the student-athletes' choice for Professor of the Year.
Professor Scott Lancaster (School of Business, Accountancy) was this year's top choice, in a decorated field of finalists that included Joost Santos (School of Engineering and Applied Sciences), Tom Guerts (School of Business, Finance) and Denver Brunsman (Department of History).Â
Additionally on Tuesday night, all GW students from the university's student body who achieved a 4.0 in either the Spring and/or Fall of 2019 were invited to be recognized in a special acknowledgement. That total amounted to 1,216 who achieved academic perfection.Â
