Colonials rack up 16 more blocks in strong defensive showing
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - GW volleyball overcame a pair of one-set deficits on Friday night against Miami and pushed the host Hurricanes to the brink before bowing out in five sets to open the Hurricane Invitational.

Key Stats
• GW hit over .200 for the third straight match, attacking at a .226 clip for the night. The Colonials peaked in the fifth set with a .389 hit percentage, registering nine kills against just one error.
• The Buff & Blue continued their early season blocking prowess with 16 total blocks. Graduate student Paty Valle led the squad with six block assists while classmate Caroline Sklaver added five.
• Senior Skylar Iott led the way offensively with 19 kills for GW, adding eight digs and a block.
• Junior Callie Fauntleroy delivered in her most extensive action of the season, hitting .438 with eight kills and three blocks.
• Miami eked out the win thanks to slight edges in kills (65-51), hitting percentage (.240-.226), assists (60-50) and digs (60-46).

Set 1: Miami 25, GW 19
• Miami started hot on its home floor, registering 16 kills with a .481 attack percentage to claim the first set.
• GW opened the match on a 5-0 run, but quickly saw the Canes respond after a timeout with six straight points as part of a 14-3 run.

• The Colonials turned things around on the defensive end to even the match, racking up seven blocks while also hitting .360 as a team.
• A 10-4 run in the middle portion of the set, keyed by three blocks from Sklaver and Valle, allowed GW to break open a back-and-forth affair and earn the set victory.

• Another close set ensued after intermission with Miami coming from behind to claim the triumph. GW jumped out to an 11-4 lead, only to see the Hurricanes rally to tie the set at 17 and eventually take the lead for good at 21-20.
• The Colonials were held to a .028 hit percentage and were only able to post one block.

• Nevertheless, GW forced a fifth set with an impressive stanza, forcing the Hurricanes into seven attack errors and holding UM to a .030 attack percentage.
• The Colonials trailed early on, 9-3, but responded after a timeout to finish the set on a 22-9 burst.

• The fifth set saw next to no separation with both sides attacking efficiently and hitting well over .250.
• The critical difference came by way of GW's four service errors in the set, allowing Miami to open up a 14-10 edge. After three straight Colonial points, a tip kill from the Canes finished off the comeback attempt.
