Junior honored after record-setting performance
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- In recognition of a record-setting effort, George Washington's Gabriele Simonti has been honored as Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Simonti showcased his excellence on the defensive end last week with 11 field blocks and four steals during GW's 3-1 showing at the Princeton Invitational. The junior from Italy saved his best for last, breaking the program single-game mark with seven field blocks, plus two steals and four goals, in a 13-12 win over the host Tigers in the weekend finale.
Simonti had at least one field block in all four games at DeNunzio Pool, including a pair in a 10-7 victory over No. 19 Brown earlier Sunday. He leads the Buff and Blue in both field blocks (13) and steals (11) through two weekends.
It's the first MAWPC weekly honor for Simonti, who joined the Colonials this fall after two seasons at Orange Coast Community College in California.
In addition, Andrew Mavis (Player of the Week) and Antonin Kralj (Rookie of the Week) were honored on the conference's weekly honor roll for their play at Princeton.
The Colonials head to the Bucknell Invitational this weekend for four games in their final tune-up for MAWPC play. They kick off the tournament Saturday afternoon vs. No. 17 St. Francis Brooklyn.
