WASHINGTON -Â A new era of GW basketball is underway with the highly-anticipated Home Opener Weekend this Saturday and Sunday tipping off the home debuts for men's and women's basketball, respectively.Â
Along with the anticipation of the play on the floor, GW Athletics has responded to fan feedback by upgrading concessions offerings. Concessions are now under the direction of Creative Food Management, which is owned and operated by GW alumna Maria Iturralde.
"I am very excited to be part of this new venture," Iturralde said. "I can still remember my graduation day here at GW and now, a few years later being a GW alumna and vendor is incredible. I'm sure fans will be very pleased with the Smith Center's new fresh look and new concession items."
Creative Food Management will be offering numerous speciality items this season, including chicken tenders that now come with the option of three dipping sauces: BBQ, honey mustard, and DC Mambo. New this year are pulled BBQ chicken and BBQ brisket sliders, both topped with picked red onions on potato buns. Popular arena fare of hot dogs, popcorn, candy, nachos and tater tots will still be featured as well.Â
There will also be a wider assortment of healthy snacks, including a hummus dip with pretzels or baby carrots, cheese squares and fruit, organic chickpea puffs, trail mix, almond packs and veggie crisps.
For dessert, fans can make their own donuts with a multitude of possibilities, featuring Nutella, raspberry or lemon glaze. Cake pops will also be available.
Beer sales have also been added to the fan experience this season at the Smith Center. Fans 21 and older can choose from a selection of Bud Light, Stella Artois, Devils Backbone Vienna Lager and Heavy Seas Loose Cannon IPA with rotating taps throughout the season.
The 2019-20 home season begins on Saturday with men's basketball hosting Howard for a 4 p.m. tip, preceded by the Home Opener Tailgate on 22nd Street between F & G starting at 2:30 p.m. Women's basketball opens its home slate on Sunday at 12 p.m. against Princeton, with a pregame Brunchketball event at 11 a.m. that is open to all fans who purchase a game ticket.Â
