Colonials return to action on Friday at Davidson
ST. LOUIS -Â GW volleyball battled its way through three sets on Sunday afternoon against Saint Louis, but the Colonials were unable to chase down the Billikens in a 3-0 defeat (17-25, 23-25, 23-25).
Senior Skylar Iott once again topped GW with 12 kills while hitting .281 in 32 attempts. Graduate student Paty Valle contributed seven kills and four blocks. In the end, the Billikens attack, which hit a strong .274 for the day, outdid the Colonials despite GW having the edge in blocks (7-5) and playing relatively even in digs (42-41).
SLU took control of the first set with a 5-1 spurt early on as the Colonials were unable to claw within five after falling behind 16-11. The second set featured a ferocious comeback from GW after opening the set down 6-1.Â
A 6-1 run of its own, capped off by a block from Valle and graduate student Caroline Sklaver, gave GW its first lead at 13-12. Neither team led by more than three the rest of the way as the Buff & Blue fended off consecutive set points with back-to-back blocks before ultimately falling 25-23.Â
Saint Louis again jumped out to a big lead in the third, 15-8, prior to six straight points from the Colonials that were punctuated by an ace from senior Jaimeson Lee. GW was unable to take the lead despite tying the set four times, the last of which came at 22-22.
The Buff & Blue continue their five-game A-10 road swing next weekend with trips to Davidson on Friday and VCU on Sunday. First serve from North Carolina against the Wildcats on Friday is set for 4:30 p.m.
