Colonials dealt first MAWPC loss of the season
SPRINGFIELD, Va. - GW men's water polo fell behind fast-starting Bucknell and couldn't catch up in a 13-8 setback on Sunday morning at The St. James.
In a rematch of last season's thrilling Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference final, the 15th-ranked Bison rolled out to an 8-1 lead in the opening quarter and dealt the No. 14 Colonials their first conference loss following four victories to begin the fall.
GW (13-4, 4-1 MAWPC) recovered from the early trouble to edge within five goals four times in the second half but never drew closer down the stretch.
Gabriele Simonti posted two goals and two assists vs. the Bison, while Chris Lee and Andrew Mavis also scored twice. Andras Levai and Jordan Blosser contributed goals to the GW attack, as well.
Matt Taylor went the distance in the GW net, recording nine saves.
UP NEXT: GW has a busy week on tap, starting with Thursday's MAWPC contest at Johns Hopkins. The Colonials will then head to the Harvard Invitational for four games over two days.
