Colonials won their second straight MAWPC title on Sunday
George Washington men's water polo claimed a second straight Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference title and NCAA Championship berth in thrilling fashion Sunday. In a back-and-forth conference final against top-seeded Bucknell, the Colonials tied it on Atakan Destici's goal at the buzzer and earned a 12-11 victory in overtime.
Â
GW (22-6) beat McKendree, 16-6, on Friday to start the MAWPC Championship before holding off Wagner, 16-14, to earn its third straight final appearance. That set the stage for Sunday's epic battle, which the Colonials won by outscoring the Bison, 3-2, in six minutes of extra time.
Â
Andrew Mavis led the Buff and Blue with three goals against the Bison, including a pair in overtime, while Destici posted two goals and three assists, highlighted by the clutch score that extended the game.
Â
Mavis and Destici were joined on the All-Tournament First Team by Austin Pyrch, who tallied a career-high 20 saves in Sunday's victory. Andras Levai was named to the All-Tournament Second Team after recording eight goals and six assists over the three games.
Â
Back in the eight-team NCAA Championship, GW continues its season Saturday with an opening-round contest at Northeast Water Polo Conference champion Princeton.
