Pair of Colonials honored after sweep to close regular season
George Washington's Andras Levai has been named Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Player of the Week, while teammate Austin Pyrch picked up the conference's Defensive Player of the Week award for the third time this fall. The pair of Colonials were honored for their play in a doubleheader sweep to close the regular season last Saturday.
Levai put together back-to-back spectacular performances, totaling seven goals, nine assists and 11 steals. The sophomore from Hungary matched his career high with nine points (four goals, five assists) in a 15-7 win over Johns Hopkins and also set a new career best with eight steals, one shy of the program record. He then added three goals, four assists and three steals in a 17-8 victory at Navy in the nightcap.
It's the first time Levai has received Player of the Week honors. He's the third different Colonial to earn the award this season, joining Atakan Destici and Andrew Mavis.
Pyrch celebrated Senior Day in style, posting a career-high 17 saves with two steals in the win over Johns Hopkins in his final home game. Then, the senior goalkeeper recorded eight more stops with four steals against four goals in the defeat of Navy. He was previously honored by the conference on Sept. 11 and 18 for his work in net.
Next up for GW is the MAWPC Championship at Fordham's Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center. Seeking a repeat title, the second-seeded Colonials open the three-day tournament Friday against No. 7 McKendree at 6 p.m. Ticket and streaming information can be found here.
