LYNCHBURG, Va. - The George Washington women's soccer squad fell to Liberty, 2-0, on the road at Osborne Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the team's first loss of the season.
The Colonials' (6-1-0) regular-season win streak comes to a close after 19 consecutive victories as the Flames (4-3-0) improve to a winning record on the year.
Senior MacKenzie Cowley tallied GW's first shot of the day in the sixth minute but missed high as the Colonials battled the Flames early on. Junior Brittany Cooper hit her mark in the 15th minute after a corner kick, but Liberty's keeper grabbed the save.
The Flames took six shots in the first half and redshirt junior Miranda Horn made two saves to keep the match scoreless at the intermission.
Liberty broke through in the 62nd minute as Gabrielle Farrell threaded the ball through a pair of GW's defenders as a diving Horn was unable to make the stop, allowing a goal for the first time in 2016 with Horn in the net.
The Flames controlled the ball for much of the second half and added insurance in the 86th minute when Liberty's Isabella Habuda broke away from the defense and drilled a shot into the left corner of the net to take a 2-0 advantage.
Cowley took her third and final shot of the match in the 88th minute, but the attempt went wide as the Colonials fell for the first time in 2016.
Horn finished the day with five saves.
The Buff and Blue return to action on Thursday when crosstown rival Georgetown visits the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a 3 p.m. match.
