The George Washington sailing team successfully defended its conference title from last fall by winning the MAISA Women's Championship on Sunday. The No. 14 Colonials outpaced No. 7 Georgetown along with No. 5 St. Mary's and the rest of the MAISA field, in the process qualifying for nationals which will be held May 24-27 in San Diego.
Miranda Bakos, Belle Strachan, India Johnstone and Emma Mendenhall led GW to a third-place finish in A Division while Hannah McNomee, Madison Oleson and Kia Olsson delivered a first-place finish in B Division, to give GW the title.
GW, which led for much of the competition, had to hold off a number of competitors. The Colonials narrowly trailed host Hobart & William Smith Colleges after race 9A, but a win by McNomee and Oleson in race 9B put GW back on top for good.
Coach John Pearce cited the team's extraordinary depth both in practice and at regattas as a chief reason for GW's success.
