COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Ryan Tucker smashed his own program record with a third-place finish in the 1,500-meter run to lead the George Washington men's outdoor track team in its season opener at the Maryland Invitational at Kehoe Track on Saturday afternoon.
Tucker finished third out of 26 competitors in 3:53.10, besting his previous school record of 4:00.09 from last season's VCU Ram Invitational. The performance marks the second-best time at that distance in the Atlantic 10 this season.
Sophomore Ryan DePinto finished less than a second behind Tucker in 3:53.41 for fourth place and a new personal record. DePinto's time stands as the third-best 1500m time in the conference this season.
Sophomore Chris Shaffer also tallied a new personal best, finishing in eighth place in 3:59.51. GW's four remaining competitors in the event - sophomore Charles Arnold (4:05.63), freshman Andrew Weber (4:07.78), junior Seamus Roddy (4:09.74) and senior Jack McCabe (4:27.42) - also posted new personal records
Sophomore Joe Verghese set a new school record in the 200m, finishing in 24.16 to best his own record by just over a second.
Freshman Sawyer Bilton also posted a new school record in the 400m in his first collegiate outdoor appearance, finishing in 52.57 to beat the previous mark by five seconds.
GW returns to action at the Colonial Relays next weekend in Williamsburg, Virginia.
