KINGSTON, R.I. - The George Washington women's soccer squad closed its 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship run in the semifinal round with a 2-0 loss to Dayton on Friday evening at the URI Soccer Complex.
Two second-half goals by the seventh-seeded Flyers proved too much for sixth-seeded GW to overcome as the Colonials finish the season with an 11-7-3 overall record.
The squads battled for possession in the first half, with Dayton holding a 5-1 advantage in shots. Redshirt junior keeper Miranda Horn made a pair of stellar saves to keep the match scoreless at the intermission.
Dayton broke through 24 seconds into the second half with a strong shot across the box from the left side to take a 1-0 lead.
The Flyers kept the pressure on, forcing Horn to make a skilled save in the 47th minute and another at the 55-minute mark.
Dayton then added insurance in the 59th minute, finding the back of the net from just inside the box.
Horn later made a spectacular save when Dayton broke through the defense and issued a shot from close range in the 70th minute.
Junior Brittany Cooper put a shot on goal in the 73rd minute, but a Dayton save preserved the Flyers' lead.
Horn made her final stop of the match in the 85th minute, but the Colonials would not go on to score as Dayton advanced to the championship match with a 2-0 win.
The Flyers stymied the GW offense throughout the match, holding the Colonials to just two shots. Horn finished with six saves on the night.
The Buff and Blue competed at the A-10 Championship for the fourth-consecutive season in 2016 and will graduate nine student-athletes.
