AMHERST, Mass. - The George Washington women's soccer squad took its second Atlantic 10 victory on Sunday with a 2-0 defeat of Massachusetts at Rudd Field.
The Colonials (8-4-1, 2-1-1 A-10) used a pair of first-half goals to control the match as the Minutewomen (2-8-1, 0-4-0) remain winless in conference play.
UMass took the first shot of the day in the first minute, but the attempt went high as the Colonials then took control of the ball.
A pair of corner kicks beginning late in the fifth minute let to a shot on goal by redshirt junior Ivana Szwejkowski that was saved and a wide shot by senior Brooke Bean.
In the 14th minute, junior Brittany Cooper took a shot of her own, but a defensive block led to a corner kick for the Colonials.
The Buff and Blue broke through in the 21st minute when senior Lina Proska netted her second goal of the season. Proska centered a pass from classmate MacKenzie Cowley and buried the go-ahead shot from 15 yards out.
Proska and Cowley reversed roles in the 27th minute as Cowley served a rebound into the net to score for the ninth time this season. Proska earned the assist to put the Colonials ahead, 2-0.
The Minutewomen took three shots off the mark before the period ended, GW leading 2-0.
UMass earned two corner kicks early in the stanza, but did not issue a second-half shot until the 59th minute, when redshirt junior keeper Miranda Horn made two quick saves within a 1:51 span. Horn made yet another save in the 63rd minute.
Senior Kate Elson took shots in the 66th and 85th minutes, but both missed high as GW regained control of the ball.
Cowley issued another attempt of her own in the 87th minute, but the shot went wide right.
Horn made her sixth and final save of the match in the 90th minute to give the Colonials a 2-0 victory and the squad's sixth clean sheet of the season.
Cowley has now scored in three of GW's four A-10 matchups in 2016. With six games remaining in the regular season, Cowley is just one score away from her career-high mark of 10 goals in a single season. With 29 career goals, Cowley ranks fourth on GW's all-time career list.
The Colonials return home to face VCU on Thursday during GW's Spirit Week before hosting Richmond on Sunday.
