Redshirt senior Bogdan Petkovic of the GW men's water polo team has been name the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Mid-Atlantic Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Petkovic led the Colonials to a pair of divisional road wins over Fordham (15-5) and Wagner (17-10) on Sunday, pacing the team with nine goals and six assists. Against Fordham, he broke a 3-3 tie in the second quarter by scoring three straight goals to give GW a lead it wouldn't surrender, and tallied five for the game.
The central defender added another four goals as GW led throughout in the win over Wagner, to improve to 4-1 in league play this season. A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Petkovic has accounted for 28 goals, 33 steals and a team-high 22 steals this season.
Last week, he was named to the CWPA Mid-Atlantic Player of the Week Honor Roll after anchoring a defensive effort that yielded just six goals to Fordham, and nine goals to Wagner. He also provided a punch to GW's offensive attack with nine assists and seven goals, and finished the weekend with six steals, four ejections drawn and two field blocks.
The 17th-ranked Colonials are back in action this weekend with a conference tilt at No. 10 Bucknell on Saturday, and non-conference matches with Princeton and La Salle on Sunday.
