ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The George Washington women's soccer team wrapped the regular season with a double-overtime loss at Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon at the Billikens' Hermann Stadium.
Redshirt junior keeper Miranda Horn made a career-high 13 saves on the day, but the Colonials (10-6-3, 4-3-3 A-10) were unable to complete a comeback at Saint Louis (14-3-2, 7-1-2 A-10) as the Billikens netted the golden goal in the second overtime period to claim the 2-1 victory.
Horn began the match with an early save in the second minute, diving to her left to make the stop.
Saint Louis kept the pressure on and broke through in the 19th minute when a cross from the left side found Danielle Tolmais six yards out. She then fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Billikens a 1-0 lead.
Horn made a crucial save in the 24th minute when Saint Louis fired another from close range, but she blocked the shot then recovered the ball to end the threat.
The Billikens held GW shotless in the first half to maintain a 1-0 edge at the intermission.
The Colonials took their first shot of the match in the 46th minute when senior MacKenzie Cowley's attempt went wide.
Horn made another great save in the 54th minute, swatting a rising shot by Saint Louis over the crossbar before making another diving stop in the 58th minute.
Cowley issued the equalizer in the 61st minute after freshman Deena DeSilva sent a long pass up the field to Cowley who broke away from the Saint Louis defense before besting the keeper with a strong shot to the back of the net, knotting the match at 1-1.
The Colonials remained dangerous, taking the ball deep into the box three times within a three-minute span beginning in the 70th minute. On the last occasion, Cowley again broke away from the defense, taking the ball into the box, but SLU's keeper came out and smothered the ball before Cowley could take a shot.
Horn made another stop on an attempt from close range in the 82nd minute and added yet another save in the 84th minute amongst a scramble in front of the net to keep the match tied up.
GW's netminder tallied one more save in regulation in the 86th minute to send the match into overtime at 1-1.
Cowley made an attempt in the 94th minute, leaping to head a cross but her shot sailed high.
Horn saved a SLU shot in the 96th minute to send the match into double overtime.
The Billikens netted the golden goal less than a minute into the second overtime period as Lindsay Sands laced a shot into the bottom left corner of the net from the top of the 18-yard box in the 111th minute to claim a 2-1 victory.
SLU's pressure proved too much for the Colonials as the Billikens outshot GW, 25-5, on the day and held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Cowley's goal marked her 10th of the season, matching a single-season career high set in 2015.
Horn's 13 saves demolished her previous career-high mark of eight saves in a match last season.
The Colonials will compete in the Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 6 seed and will take on third-seeded Duquesne on Thursday at 2 p.m. at URI.
