WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer squad played Rhode Island to a 0-0 double overtime draw on Thursday afternoon in the Colonials' 2016 home finale at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (10-5-3, 4-2-3 A-10) held a 13-4 advantage in corner kicks but could not find the back of the net in 110 minutes of play.
The squads battled for possession in the first half, logging just five total shots and forcing one save from each goalkeeper to keep the match scoreless at the intermission.
A similar story unfolded in the second half, with URI holding a slight shot advantage, 4-3, and putting two on frame. Redshirt junior Miranda Horn tallied both saves.
Senior Lina Proska issued GW's strongest shot in regulation time in the 84th minute, but her attempt went just wide left as the match went into overtime.
In the first overtime period, sophomore Mia Barreda fired a shot from just inside the box, but a URI save preserved the stalemate. GW held a 3-0 shot advantage in the stanza, but could not find the back of the net to send the match to double overtime.
Rhode Island responded in the second overtime with the only two shots of the frame. Horn made a stellar save in the 108th minute as the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
Horn finished the day with five saves.
Just 17 total shots were issued on Thursday, with URI edging GW, 9-8.
The Colonials wrap the regular season on Sunday at Saint Louis. The Buff and Blue have already clinched a spot in next week's Atlantic 10 Championship hosted by URI and will await seeding pending Sunday's results.
