WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer squad defeated Atlantic 10 foe Richmond, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus as the Colonials increased their unbeaten streak to four games.
GW (10-4-1, 4-1-1 A-10) has reached the 10-win plateau for the third consecutive season under head coach Sarah Barnes.
The Colonials controlled the ball for most of the first half with several chances to score.
Senior MacKenzie Cowley tapped a slick shot toward the goal in the fourth minute, but Richmond's keeper ultimately made the save after a brief bobble. Redshirt junior Ivana Szwejkowski followed with a shot of her own in the ninth minute, but another save kept the Colonials scoreless.
Junior Brittany Cooper got off two quick shots in the 20th and 21st minutes, and Cowley sent a strong shot toward the net in the 22nd minute, but a block and two saves prevented a goal.
Senior Lina Proska nearly broke the stalemate in the 26th minute, but her attempt went just over the crossbar.
The Colonials finally broke through in the 36th minute when Proska sent a quick pass into the box to Cowley, who found the bottom right corner of the net from eight yards out to put GW ahead 1-0.
GW quickly added to its lead in the 43rd minute. Redshirt junior Erin Boudreau dished a pass from inside the box to freshman Annie Pierce on the right side. Pierce then sent a cross back in the box to sophomore Dani Frese who sent the ball on the ground though Richmond's keeper to put the Buff and Blue up, 2-0, at the half.
GW quickly earned a corner kick to open the second stanza, but redshirt freshman Meg McCormick's header sailed high of her mark in the 50th minute.
The Spiders (7-7-1, 2-4-0 A-10) picked up their intensity in the second half, issuing nine unanswered shots over the next 31 minutes of play, but redshirt junior keeper Miranda Horn made three saves and the rest missed their target as the Colonials held on to their 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Anna Tapen took over goalminding duties in the 75th minute.
Richmond's lone goal came in the 90th minute to put the final score at 2-1.
Cowley's goal marked her team-leading ninth of the season and her third in conference play. Frese's goal was the eventual game-winner and the first score of her career.
The Colonials return to action on Thursday with a visit to Fordham to begin the penultimate week of regular-season play.
