WASHINGTON - After winning two consecutive home games last week, the George Washington women's soccer team returns to the pitch on Thursday evening to visit UMBC at Retriever Soccer Park in the final non-conference match of the season.
The Colonials (4-4-0) recorded a pair of shutouts at home last week, blanking Liberty, 3-0, on Thursday before defeating Delaware State, 2-0, on Sunday behind a pair of goals by junior MacKenzie Cowley. UMBC (2-6-1) snapped a four-game skid on Friday with its own victory against Delaware State, 1-0.
Cowley leads the squad with six goals on the season. She sits atop the Atlantic 10 and ranks 20th in the nation in goals per game (0.86) through games played on Sept. 21. Sunday's effort marked Cowley's second multi-goal game of the season.
Between the posts, redshirt-sophomore Miranda Horn leads GW with 25 saves while playing the bulk of the minutes for the Colonials. Senior Ellen Conway has chipped in seven saves and has combined with Horn for all four of the squad's shutouts in 2015.
Gabby Boehmer leads UMBC's offense with eight points on four goals, while Alexa Quaranta ranks second on the squad with five points (1g, 3a).
In goal, Jen Nance has set aside a team-best 33 shots and allowed 12 goals on the season.
The Colonials lead in the all-time series with the Retrievers, 11-1-1, most recently defeating UMBC, 1-0, in 2010. Thursday's bout is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
