WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer downed visiting Liberty in a decisive, 3-0, victory at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (3-4-0) got on the board in the 20th minute by virtue of a Liberty own goal after a corner kick by GW's Brooke Stoller went off the back of a Liberty player and passed the keeper to give the Buff and Blue a 1-0 lead.
GW increased its lead in the 32nd minute when a Liberty foul on senior Kristi Abbate in the box led to a successful penalty kick by Stoller for her first score of the season - and second of her career - to put the Colonials up, 2-0, at the half.
The Colonials tallied their final goal of the day just 2:26 into the second half as Abbate dribbled a ball into the center of the box from the right wing and placed the ball into the upper right corner of the goal, out of reach of the Flames' keeper. With Abbate's first goal of the season, the Colonials took a 3-0 lead that would stand through the end of the contest.
GW held possession of the ball for much of the game, leading the Flames in corner kicks, 11-4.
While Liberty out-shot the Colonials, 10-7, only four of the Flames' shots were on goal, compared to GW's six. Redshirt-sophomore keeper Miranda Horn set aside three shots, while senior Ellen Conway recorded one save on the day. The duo combined for the squad's third shutout of the season.
The Colonials wrap their homestand on Sunday as Delaware State visits the GW Soccer Field for a 1 p.m. Kid's Day match-up. Children aged 12 and under are invited to participate in a free one-hour clinic on the field after the game.
