WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer team opens its home slate on Sunday as East Carolina visits the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Students and fans are encouraged to arrive early to the 1 p.m. contest, as free food and games will be available beginning at noon for GW's Kickin' it at the Vern promotion.
The Colonials (1-1-0) opened their season last weekend with a pair of matches in Fullerton, California. On Friday, junior Lina Proska's golden goal 7:40 into the first overtime gave GW the edge over UC Riverside, 1-0, in the season opener. On Sunday, the Buff and Blue fell to the Big West conference's reigning champion Cal State Fullerton in a 4-1 defeat, as junior MacKenzie Cowley put one between the posts to account for GW's goal.
The East Carolina Pirates (1-0-1) kicked off their season with a 2-0 victory over George Mason on Friday, as Kendall Frey and Lana Spitler each reached the back of the net. On Sunday, East Carolina's battle with Loyola-Chicago ended in a 0-0 (2OT) tie. The Pirates will take on William & Mary on Friday, Aug. 28, before traveling to the District.
Sunday's meeting between the Colonials and Pirates will be just the second in program history - the first came in 2013 and resulted in a 1-1 (2OT) tie.
