"Our team won based on excellent speed and good fundamentals, nothing fancy," said head coach John Pearce. "It's a function of having a large team pushing each other and learning from each other at practice, and that's why we came out on top. In sailing, the only way to get faster is to sail against other fast boats, and we have that every day."
Along with the effort put forth by Bakos, Strachan, McNomee and Oleson, the Colonials were fortunate to have a strong group of alternates in Maria Sinagra, India Johnstone, Gabriella Malek and Kia Olsson. That kind of depth and competition in practice has helped GW reach new heights.
"While most teams had one or two alternates on shore, we had four great sailors on-call, ready for any wind condition and making sure we were prepared for every race. That kind of depth makes you hard to beat, and the additional team spirit adds a lot as well."
