WASHINGTON - Sofia Pavon's goal off a free kick just 3:04 into the match proved to be the game-winner as the Colonials edged Fordham, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus to remain perfect in Atlantic 10 play.
With their program-record 10th consecutive victory, the Colonials (12-4-0, 7-0-0 A-10) hold the longest active win streak in the nation.
GW struck early as Fordham was called for a foul just outside the box within the first few minutes of the game, and the Colonials were awarded a free kick. Pavon was given the ball and blasted a laser into the upper right corner of the goal to give the Buff and Blue a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute with her sixth goal of the season and team-best fourth game-winner.
The Rams (10-6-0, 4-3-0 A-10) tallied six unanswered shots through the remainder of the fist half. Fordham nearly found the equalizer in the 38th minute on a shot by Jessica Widmann, but the ball sailed a few inches above the crossbar to preserve GW's lead.
The Colonials' defense prevailed in the second half as Fordham got off four more shots, but GW's back line held under pressure to help the Colonials to a 1-0 victory and the squad's fourth consecutive shutout. The squad has posted 10 clean sheets on the season, tying the 1990 team for the most in program history.
"Our players fought really hard today," said Head Coach Sarah Barnes. "I don't think we were as organized out there as we needed to be today, as Fordham really controlled the tempo of the game. The reason we came out with the result today is strictly because we really competed and battled, and you need that to win."
The Colonials return to the pitch on Sunday as they visit George Mason for a Revolutionary Rivalry battle at 2 p.m.
