WASHINGTON - After just under a week of preseason training, the George Washington women's soccer team welcomes nearby rival American to the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for an exhibition match on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The tune-up will be the first of the season for both the Colonials and the Eagles and is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
GW and American met in last season's opener, when the Buff and Blue came away with a 1-0 victory. Then-rookie MacKenzie Cowley scored in the 72nd minute of play to lift the Colonials over the Eagles at Reeves Field as they claimed their first season-opening victory since 2009.
GW welcomes back 24 letterwinners from the 2013 squad that reached the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time in 11 years and posted the most shutouts in a season since 1994. Sophomores Cowley and Lina Proska led the Colonials' offense in 2013, as they each scored three goals and tallied an assist for seven points on the year. The squad also returns A-10 All-Conference Second Team selection Kristi Abbate, who ranked second on the team with 34 shots taken, as well as three-fifths of its starting back line in seniors Alex Brothers, Elizabeth Casey and MacKenzie McIndoe.
Following the its exhibition match against American, GW will travel to face Delaware on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. before opening the 2014 regular season on Friday, Aug. 22 with a 5 p.m. home match against Mount St. Mary's.
