RICHMOND, Va. - The GW women's soccer team fell to Atlantic 10 foe VCU, 1-0, on Saturday night at the Rams' Sports Backers Stadium.
A VCU goal midway through the first half proved to be enough to defeat the Colonials (10-4-1, 3-2-1 A-10), who were handed just their second league loss of the season.
Sophomore Kate Elson took a team-high two shots for the Buff and Blue while senior Meg Murphy, juniors Kristi Abbate and Brooke Stoller and freshman Brittany Cooper each made an attempt at the goal.
The squads traded shots for the first 12 minutes of action before the Rams (8-4-4, 4-1-1 A-10) fired off four straight and eventually found the back of the net. At the 23:40 mark, VCU's Casey Boyer slid the ball through the GW defense from 18 yards out to the middle of the box where Jackie Ernest settled the pass, quickly turned around and fired to the top right corner of the net past redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn's fingertips.
GW took five of its six shots during the first frame, including a blast from 35 yards out by Murphy that forced VCU keeper Emma Kruse to make a save.
Horn came up with a huge diving save for the Colonials with 5:42 to play in the first half when she dove to the left to punch out an attempt by the Rams' Sharon Wojcik.
VCU outshot GW, 18-6, on the night and held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. The second half was a defensive battle, as the Colonials took one shot and the Rams took three, all of which went wide or high.
Horn made three saves between the posts for the Colonials.
GW returns to the GW Soccer Field at the Mount Vernon Campus to host Dayton on Friday, Oct. 31 for its home finale. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
