WASHINGTON - George Washington women's soccer will play host to a pair of Atlantic 10 teams in Davidson and Richmond this weekend. The Colonials first welcome the conference newcomer Wildcats to the GW Soccer Field on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before facing the Spiders for their Senior Day match on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
GW (8-3-1, 1-1-1 A-10) is coming off of its first league win of the season with 2-1 triumph over Massachusetts on Saturday. The Colonials tallied first-half goals from sophomores of MacKenzie Cowley and Lina Proska to defeat the Minutewomen and remain perfect at home with a record of 5-0-0.
The Buff and Blue's back line has been tough to break as GW has allowed a league-low 10 goals to pace the conference with a 0.81 goals-against average. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn ranks second in the conference and is tied for 44th in NCAA Division I with a .842 save percentage while recording 48 saves.
Cowley, who recorded three points against Massachusetts with a goal and an assist, paces GW's attack with six goals and two helpers for 14 points. Junior Kristi Abbate, who assisted both of the Colonials' goals last weekend, is second on the team with eight points on two goals and four assists, and redshirt junior Nicole Belfonti (3g, 1a) is third with seven points.
Davidson and GW will match up on Friday afternoon for the first time as conference foes. The Wildcats come to the district on a two-game skid with an overall record of 4-9-1 and an A-10 mark of 1-2-0. Davidson, which is 2-5-0 on the road, has been outscored by its opponents, 17-10. Stephanie Piperno (3g, 1a) and Vicky Bruce (2g, 1a) lead the Wildcats' offense with seven points apiece, and goalkeeper Rachel Locke has made 75 saves for a .815 save percentage and 1.17 goals-against average.
Richmond (8-5-1, 2-0-1 A-10) will face crosstown rival VCU on Friday before making its way to GW on Sunday afternoon. The Spiders are coming off a 1-0 win at Davidson last weekend and are currently on a four-match unbeaten streak. Four Richmond players have recorded double-digit points this season in Meghan Carrigan (11g, 2a, 24 pts), Ashley Reifner (8g, 7a, 23 pts), Shannon Colligan (1g, 11a, 13 pts) and Lexi Prillman (3g, 6a, 12 pts). Katie Brennan, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, has made 20 saves and allowed four goals in four appearances between the posts.
Prior to their match against the Spiders, the Colonials will honor Alex Brothers, Elizabeth Casey, Madison Davis, Taylor Katz, MacKenzie McIndoe, Sydney Morris and Meg Murphy in a Senior Day ceremony.
