Rookie MacKenzie Cowley lifted George Washington women's soccer to a 1-0 season-opening victory at American on Friday when she netted the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute of action. In her collegiate debut Cowley broke the scoreless tie when she collected the deflection of a shot from sophomore Kristi Abbate with her chest and rolled the ball into the center of the net. The Sea Grit, N.J., product helped the Colonials secure a season opening win for the first time since 2009.
