LEWISBURG, Pa. - The George Washington men's water polo team fell to Southern Division rival Bucknell, 13-8, on Sunday afternoon at the Bison's Kinney Natatorium.
Neither team could muster much offense in the first quarter, as the game was tied, 1-1, after eight minutes. Junior Paul Deasey scored the Colonials' lone goal of the period.
Bucknell began to pull away in the second period, however, outscoring GW, 4-1. After a quick Bison goal just 51 seconds into the quarter, sophomore Ridvan Pehlivan tied it up at the 6:32 mark, but Bucknell scored three in a row to end the half with a 5-2 lead.
The teams combined for 11 goals in an offense-heavy third quarter, but GW (9-11, 1-4 Southern) was unable to mount a comeback as the teams alternated tallies for the entire period. The Bison led, 11-7, after three and held on for the 13-8 victory.
Pehlivan led GW with three goals, and sophomore Brian Mojica dished out a team-best three assists. Senior goalkeeper Cameron Illes recorded 11 saves.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, when they host Southern Division rival Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m. Before the contest, GW will honor its three seniors - Illes, John Paul Bezerra and Guy Helman - as well as graduate student Milos Purkovic in a Senior Night ceremony.
