NORFOLK, Va. - Playing as a collective unit for the first time in the 2011 season, the George Washington women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Old Dominion in an exhibition match Thursday evening at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium. The Colonials took the field with a new combination of players this year, having lost 13 members from last year's roster while adding nine newcomers.
The Monarchs didn't take long to score, netting their first goal at the 06:16 mark off of a Jocelyn Weidner free kick to Lisa Bernardini. Old Dominion struck again 11 minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Monarchs tallied three shots before Jessica Klamut found her way around Colonials goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe. Bernardini registered her second goal and the final of the night less than seven minutes later. Kate Kelly was credited with the assist.
GW took six shots in the remaining 32:48 but could not find the net. Despite struggling to find the back of the goal, the Colonials put a strong offensive effort as ODU held just a 17-12 advantage in shots.
Junior forward Adriana Moya tallied a game-high three shots and sophomore Claire Haft and freshman Taylor Katz took two shots apiece.
Rowe totaled four saves for GW and sophomore Nicole Ulrick set aside one shot.
Brianna Alvarado and Laura Bush each made three saves for the Monarchs.
GW (0-0) opens the season Aug. 19 when it hosts District rival No. 23 Georgetown (0-0) at the newly renovated Mount Vernon Soccer Field. The Colonials and Hoyas will meet for the third straight season and fifth time in the past six years. Live video streaming of the 4 p.m. match can be viewed on GW All-Access at www.GWsports.com. GW's Mount Vernon Soccer Field is located at 2100 Foxhall Road in northwest Washington.
