Katie Butz was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 DC Volleyball Challenge, a local round-robin tournament that includes GW, Georgetown, American and George Mason. The senior from Columbus, OH, led the Colonials with 46.5 points in the three matches as GW defeated all three teams to win the 2009 DC Challenge title, it's second in the four-year history of the event, played Friday and Saturday at GMU and AU. In Friday's 3-2 victory over Georgetown, Butz recorded 11 kills with nine digs and five blocks for 15 points. On Saturday, Butz led the Colonials with 16 kills and seven blocks for 19.5 points in the Colonials' 3-1 triumph over host American. In Saturday's second match, Butz again led the team with 10 kills while hitting .444 as GW blitzed George Mason, 3-0. Butz's stats for the week: three matches, 12 sets, 37 kills, .310 hitting percentage, 15 total blocks (2 solo, 13 assisted), 23 digs, four assists and one service ace for 46.5 total points.
