WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington University sophomore Sierra Smidinger scored in the sixth minute for the Colonials to win 1-0, Friday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies.
Smidinger's second goal of the season came off a pass from junior Kristen Slack that trickled through defenders and behind SBU's goalkeeper Nicole Markert.
With the win, the Colonials broke a three-game loosing streak to improve to 5-7-4 overall on the season and to 2-4-4 in Atlantic 10 play. The Bonnies even their record to 8-8 and fall to 5-2 in conference play.
St. Bonaventure created multiple chances to score in the second half with time running down, earning back-to-back corners in the 87th minute of play. The Colonials defense was able to clear the ball back down the field.
The Colonials tied a season high 17 shots taken in the game. Smidinger and senior Dara Rosen had four shots each, with eight other Colonials taking at least one shot in the game.
GW goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe tallied her fourth shutout of the season, one shy of her total last season. The GW defense held SBU to only three shots in the first half.
The Colonials return to the field Sunday, Oct. 25, to take on Duquesne at 11 a.m. for Senior Day as the last home game of the 2009 season. Also this game is the first "GW Women's Athletics Thinks Pink" event of the year, to unite in the fight against breast cancer. The men's soccer team will host Dayton at 2 p.m., as game two of the Sunday doubleheader.
