CHARLOTTE, NC - Junior Ashley Starks netted her fourth goal of the season in the ninth minute of the game for George Washington to take the early lead Sunday over Charlotte, but the Colonials were unable to hold the lead. The 49ers came back to win 3-2.
Starks was fed the ball in the box off a long pass from freshman Samie Cloutier. Freshman Kayley Sullivan netted her first goal of the season at the 31st minute off the game off a pass by sophomore Sierra Smidinger.
The Colonials (4-7-4, 1-4-2 A-10) defense was able to hold the 49ers off the board in the first half. GW goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe stopped all four Charlotte shots in the first half.
After halftime, Charlotte (13-2-1,7-0-1) got on the board in the 64th minute by Lacey McGowan, the first of her two goals of the day, heading in a Hailey Beam corner kick into the right side of the goal. Beam and McGowan hooked up about seven minutes later on the same corner kick play to tie the game, 2-2.
Charlotte's Macky Wingo was fed the ball on passes from Jonna Handra and Beam on a breakaway for the game-winning goal.
The Colonials had six shots with all but one on goal against the 49ers, but were out shot by eight. Charlotte was able to keep GW from earning any corners kicks in the game.
The Colonials return to Mount Vernon Field Friday, Oct. 23, to host the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. As game two of the men's and women's soccer double-header, the game is set to kick off at 3:00 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men's game, which begins at 12:30 p.m.
