PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington women's soccer team played to another last-minute decision before falling, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at La Salle.
La Salle pressured George Washington for most of the first half. Gaining the advantage on seven corner kicks and recording four shots on goal but LU freshman goalkeeper Mellisa Sanger turned away each Colonials' shot.
The Colonials on the other had a five-minute spurt at the end of the first half that had them narrowly missing several scoring opportunities with shots from Misa Eiritz and Erica Wright.
GW continued its strong offensive play in the second half and more than doubled its shot output in the first half with 11. The Explorers' Sanger was sharp, however, as she denied every Colonials' attempt to put a goal on the board.
The Colonials' offense pushed on but the defense gave in at 51:54. La Salle's Heather Steadman scored on a pass from Traci Depasquale giving the Explorers a 1-0 lead.
The lead was extended to two goals when Depasquale passed a ball to Alex Conley who got behind the Colonial back line for a breakaway and put the ball past goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe.
The Colonials' next match will be at Mount Vernon Field (2100 Foxhall Rd. NW) against Atlantic 10 foe Massachusetts on Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. Two days later, GW will host Rhode Island in a 1 p.m. contest.
