Washington, DC - The GW women's soccer team begins its march toward St. Louis and the Atlantic 10 Tournament this Wednesday as the team returns to campus for preseason camp. Twenty-Four student-athletes will take part in two full weeks of training before they travel north to take on the Scarlett Knights of Rutgers University in the season opener on August 23rd.
Head Coach Tanya Vogel is excited to get started with a veteran team that includes the outstanding leadership of rising seniors Stephanie Covello, Lauren Kelly, Christy Mazzola, Keara Mehlert, Kerry Philbin, Meghan Pyle, and Erica Wright. "We are looking for our seniors to work as one and lead the team toward our goals. They have outstanding sophomores and juniors to work with as we bring this group together," Vogel added.
Additionally, Coach Vogel and Associate Head Coach Neel Bhattacharjee are looking forward to the addition of their incoming freshmen (see Women's Soccer Announces 2008 Recruits).
Joining the class of 2012 is defender Janine Rotsides who committed to GW in the spring. Rotsides hails from Morristown, NJ, and played for both Morris Catholic and Matchfit Academy Magic. While in high school, Rotsides captained her team to Conference Championships, County Finals and the NJ State Sectional Finals. She was named Colonial Hills Conference Player of the Year, NJ All-State (2005, 2007) and First team All-Conference, All-County and All-Area her senior year. Rotsides also was a 2008 NJSIAA Scholar-Athlete, 2008 Morris County Scholar-Athlete, member of the National Honor Society and recipient of several other academic awards.
The preseason will kick off with the annual Buff and Blue intrasquad scrimmage at 6:30 pm on August 7 at the Mount Vernon Soccer Field located at 21 Foxhall Road, in northwest Washington.
