WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's soccer team (1-2) scored two goals in the 89th minute to defeat Bryant University (1-3) 3-2 at Mount Vernon Field Sunday afternoon. Misa Eiritz's goal with seconds remaining completed the rally pushing the Colonials to their first win of the season.
"Today showed a lot about this team's resiliency and character. Everyone still believed we would find a way to pull this game out after we gave up a second goal" said Bhatacharjee. "To get two goals very late in the game just shows how this group plays all the way to the end. This way a strong way to come back after a tough loss on Friday to a determined ODU team."
Bryant opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the game from a shot by Alex DiPippo that found the back of the net. Junior Dara Rosen pulled the score back to even on a cross from Eiritz at 26:56.
Both teams buckled down on defense until Bryant's Holly Tyser punched the ball in after a mad scramble in front of the net at 73:30 pushing Bryant to a one goal lead. After going down a goal George Washington began pushing the action. Seniors Meg Pyle and Keara Mehlert had numerous scoring chances finally capitalizing with a goal by Mehlert with a minute remaining. Erica Wright crossed the ball into the box where Mehlert volleyed it off the cross bar and into the net.
"When you get on the field you just have to make the best of it. We have so much depth on our team this year, that you have to work hard, and those chances will come" said Eiritz.
Eiritz completed the rally, scoring the game-winning goal at the 89:48 mark. Wright quickly pushed the ball up field to Eiritz who got into open space in the box and blasted a shot into the left side of the net making the score 3-2.
"We are very happy that the team fought through to the end to get the win. Bryant came out ready to play and put us on our heels. Our team displayed amazing perseverance and worked hard as a team, with many different people contributing on and off the field" said Vogel. "I credit the entire team with this victory and am confident that we'll have a great week of training going into Virginia Tech's tournament."
Next up the GW women's soccer team travels to Blacksburg, VA this weekend for the Virginia Tech tournament. The Colonials will play #21 Wake Forest on September 5 at 3:30 pm and Virginia Tech September 7 at 1:30 pm. The next game back at Mount Vernon Field (2100 Foxhall Rd. NW) for GW will be on Friday, September 12 at 4 pm against Delaware St.
