WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's soccer (0-1), playing in their first match of the 2008 season, saw their fast start fall short as Rutgers (1-0) defeated the Colonials 3-1 late Saturday night.
GW got on the board first at 38:33 with the first goal of freshman Brittany Schornstein's young GW career. Junior Liz Hillin and freshman Sierra Smidinger assisted on the goal.
The score remained 1-0 well into the second half until Kristie Lang, Alicia Hall, and Ashley Jones scored three unanswered goals for Rutgers bringing the score to 3-1.
Unfortunately the Colonials were unable to fight back. Rutgers outshot GW three to one and had nine corner kicks to GW's zero. The Colonials had 15 fouls, one of which led to a RU penalty kick goal.
The story of the game for GW was strong contributions by their freshmen. Along with Schornstein's goal and Smidinger's assist, fellow freshman Lindsey Rowe put in a strong first performance saving 10 Rutgers shots.
Next up for George Washington is their home opener against Old Dominion. The game will take place Friday, August 29 at 4 pm, at Mount Vernon Field (2100 Foxhall Rd, NW).
