WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's and women's soccer programs will "Kick for the Cure" to benefit the GW Breast Care Center during their Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader this Sunday at Mount Vernon Field.
Both GW soccer programs are working with the GW Cancer Institute's Breast Care, Breast Imaging and Intervention Centers to assist in raising breast cancer awareness. Sunday's matches will feature speaker Dr. Rachel Brem, Director of Breast Imaging and Intervention at the GW Cancer Institute, as well as breast cancer awareness pins for the first 100 fans. The Colonials men's and women's teams will wear pink "Kick for the Cure" warm-ups and ask that fans also wear pink to support the cause.
Additionally, fans will be encouraged to make donations to the GW Cancer Institute's Breast Care, Breast Imaging and Intervention Center.
Dr. Brem will speak about the programs the GW Breast Care Center offers, including the Mobile Mammography Program which began in 1996 with a generous grant from the Cancer Research Foundation of America. Dedicated to providing area women with education and support, this self-contained mobile unit travels to corporate and community sites in the DC metropolitan area, offering one-stop screening performed in a comfortable, convenient environment. The program is committed to making this service available to every woman, regardless of ability to pay.
"Our student-athletes are so excited and honored to be a part of this event," said GW women's soccer head coach Tanya Vogel. "Our seven seniors are starting a new tradition on their Senior Day in hopes that future senior classes will continue to raise awareness for breast cancer treatment. I am very proud to be a part of this event and we hope to have an excellent turnout Sunday."
Sunday's matches will also feature the annual "Kickin' It at The 'Vern" event as part of GW Spirit Week. The GW Cheer Team, First Ladies' Dance Team and Colonials' mascots will perform at both matches and students, fans and alumni are encouraged to attend brunch at Mount Vernon's Ames Dining Hall prior to the women's Senior Day match against Charlotte at 12:00 pm.
GW soccer will also host a doubleheader Friday, Oct. 17, with the men battling Temple at 12:00 pm and the women facing Saint Louis at 3:00 pm.
