WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's and women's soccer programs will host a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheaders, as well as welcome many former players, during their annual Soccer Alumni Weekend, beginning with Friday's women's match against Temple at 12:00 pm.
The GW men's soccer team will look to position itself for an Atlantic 10 Championship bid with key matches against Charlotte (7-5-1, 1-2-1 A-10) Friday at 3:00 pm, and No. 15 Saint Louis (7-2-3, 3-1-0 A-10) Sunday at 12:00 pm. The 15th-ranked Billikens are the highest-ranked team to visit Mount Vernon Field since the facility opened in 2001.
The Colonials are tied with the 49ers for seventh place in the A-10 standings with four points, while the Billikens are in a three-way tie (Massachusetts, Saint Joseph's) for first with nine points. The top six teams in the league standings qualify for the A-10 Championship, which will be held at Dayton's Baujan Field, Nov. 15-18. A perennial national power, Saint Louis captured 10 NCAA Championships between 1959 and 1973 and has lost just two of its 22 Atlantic 10 matches since joining the league in 2005. GW shut out SLU, 2-0, at Mount Vernon in 2005 in the two programs' lone meeting.
GW's women's soccer team (6-8-0, 1-6-0 A-10) faces must-win situations in each of its final four matches in order to keep its A-10 Championship hopes intact. The women's program will recognize five players during Senior Day ceremonies against Saint Joseph's Sunday at 3:00 pm. The Colonials are a combined 17-6-0 all-time against the Owls and Hawks.
An alumni game is scheduled for 12:00 pm Saturday, with a reception at Post Hall immediately following the match. More than 70 former GW soccer players attended last year's event.
Sunday's doubleheader will be held in conjunction with the annual "Kickin' It at The `Vern" event. Students, fans and alumni are encouraged to attend brunch at Mount Vernon's Ames Dining Hall prior to the men's match against Saint Louis at 12:00 pm. The GW Cheer Team, First Ladies' Dance Team and Colonials' mascots will perform at both matches, with refreshments available to spectators between games. Fans also are encouraged to wear blue to Sunday's matches.
