SAINT LOUIS, MO - George Washington women's soccer surrendered an early second-half goal and was unable to recover, as they fell in an Atlantic 10 Conference match at Saint Louis, 1-0, early Sunday afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The Billikens, the 2006 A-10 Tournament Champions, improved to 8-3-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the conference. The Colonials fell to 6-7-0 and 1-5-0 in league play. After starting the season 5-2, GW has now lost five of their past six games.
In Sunday's match, Saint Louis, who is receiving votes in the latest SoccerBuzz.com Central Region rankings, was tested by George Washington throughout the whole match, but the Billiken defense was up to the challenge, as they held the Colonials to just three shots.
Saint Louis, who recorded 22 shots, took control of the match in the early going of the second-half. On a corner kick, Julia Bradenberg sent the ball in on net, where Kristen Sapienza rose above the crowd and headed the ball in from eight-yards out. That would be enough for Saint Louis to secure the win, as they went on to limit GW to just one shot on goal, coming off the foot of freshman Cynthia Gamboa (Reisterstown, MD/Notre Dame Prep.)
GW keeper Amie Kern (Saylorsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) recorded nine saves in the match and now has 88 stops on the year.
The Colonials return home on Saturday, October 20, as they try to stop their current two-game skid when they host Richmond (3-9-2, 2-3-1 A-10) at 3:00 p.m.
