Opening Statement
Joe McKeown, GW Head Coach: "First of all, I want to congratulate Tennessee and wish them the best for the rest of the tournament. They were a pretty good 2 seed, I'll say that much. They got off to such a hot start, so by the time I think we really got our arms around this game, we just ran out of gas. We played really hard that stretch to get the lead down, and then after working so hard to get it down, we let them come back and we only made a couple of shots. I am really proud of Jessica Simmonds, my only senior. I think my team battled back, showed a lot of poise, and we really had a great season."
On psyche during their second half comeback
Jessica Simmonds, Senior Forward: "We knew we had to come back in order to be alive, and if we didn't we were going to go home. So we went out there and gave everything we had to come back. "
On Tennessee's size
Kim Beck, Sophomore Guard: "Since they are bigger, they are slower, so we tried to use our speed to take them off the dribble more."
On Tennessee's physical play inside
Simmonds: "Tennessee has a big front line and back line, and their very physical inside, but we had to play with the lineup they were giving us. We had to fight back, and push them back."
On Tennessee's fast start
Simmonds: "I just think we broke down a few times on defense, and let their shooters get wide open. We didn't put a hand up on their shooters, we just didn't get them.
On defending Zolman, Parker, and Hornbuckle
Coach McKeown: "I thought half the time we did a pretty good job on Candace. I felt the second half we did a much better job with Zolman. Parker ended up 5-13. When I was watching the tape to get ready them, I thought Zolman was their best player. I think they feed off of her."
On losing only one senior
Coach McKeown: "We signed three high school All-Americans, and I'm pretty psyched about that. This is great for my team, being in the tournament. They needed a tournament like this to understand that they can play with the Tennessee's, the Candace Parkers, and the Old Dominion's. I think this is a great experience for them. We are going to have four starters back, but we have to get better. We have to get seeded a little better. I'm proud of this team for this season."
