Patriots Outpace Colonials In Swimming And Diving

WASHINGTON, DC - GW's men's and women's swimming and diving teams lost to George Mason on Senior Day at the Smith Center. The women's team had the lead going into the final relay and just lost 125-117 after a close second-place finish. The women drop to (3-5) after their last dual meet of the season. The men lost 141-100 to GMU and trailed for most of the meet despite winning the first relay of the day. The men fall to 1-7 on the season as the team prepairs for the Atlantic 10 Championships which will be held in Buffalo, NY.
GW got of to a fast start when both the men's and the women's teams won the 400-yd medley relay. The women's team would hold their early lead until late while the men soon fell behind. Swimming and diving was contested earlier in the day at George Mason and the host took all four first place finishes including a sweep of the top three spots in both women's dives.
The Colonials three senior women's captains celebrated senior day with first place finishes. Crystal Freeman (Fr. Dix, NJ/Red Bank Regional) and Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Westminster) lead GW with two first place finishes each. In the first individual event of the meet, Freeman finished first in the 1,000-yd freestyle with a time of 10:39.33 followed by a winning time of 5:11.51 in the 500-yd freestyle. Fagley won the 100-yd freestyle in 53.88 and the 200-yd freestyle in 1:56.31.
Senior Ruth Dubyel (West Point, NY/James I. O'Neill) also took first in the 100-yd butterfly with a time of 58.09. Sophomore Maggie Moss (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) won both the 200-yd individual medley in 2:11.39 and then the 100-yd backstroke in 58.74. Moss is nationally ranked in the 200-yd backstroke where her GW-record time is tied for 66th in Division I and her GW record time in the 100-yd backstroke is tied for 74th in the nation.
The men's team was paced by freshman Sean Flaherty (Scarborough, MD/Scarborough) who finished first in the 1,000-yd freestyle in an A-10-best 9:37.87. Flaherty then followed this outstanding performance with a first place finish in the 500-yd freestyle in 4:42.53. Senior Andrew De Sorbo (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury) finished first with a time of 53.04 in the 100-yd butterfly. Jonathan Sabin (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) also took first place for the Colonials when he finished the 100-yd backstroke in a time of 54.11.
GW will conclude the 2003-04 season in Buffalo, NY at the Atlantic 10 Championships on February 19-21.
